October 10th marks World Mental Health Day annually. Its purpose is to raise awareness about mental health issues and promote efforts to improve mental well-being worldwide.
Mental health is an integral part of overall health and well-being. It affects how people think, feel, and act, influencing daily activities, relationships, and the ability to cope with stress. Disorders like depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder can severely impact the quality of life.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in every 8 people lives with a mental disorder. Despite the prevalence of such issues, mental health care often lags behind other medical services in many countries.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been treating people with mental health conditions for thousands of years and has a rather different, much more holistic perspective. Chinese medicine does not make any radical distinction between physical, emotional, mental and spiritual disorders. It understands that a physical pain can be caused by an emotional upset and that an emotional shock can be due to a physical cause.
Chinese Medicine can seek to treat all medical conditions, mental, emotional or physical, by working directly on the Qi within the body. All are seen as disharmonies of the body's Qi. The treatment, in very basic terms, is to restore the Qi back to its healthy state of balance and harmony.
TCM treatment methods such as Acupuncture, Medical Qigong and Herbal Medicine are used in a similar way to treat mental and emotional health issues as to treat more physical conditions. This means the TCM Practitioner is equipped to treat clients with such problems without having to immediately refer them on to a specialist.
In addition, in the hands of a qualified practitioner, it is a natural, safe and holistic medical approach.
